I absolutely love to bake, and I’m a sucker for a beautifully shot cake recipe that looks like a challenge. So last summer (before I started working at InStyle!), I was thumbing through the July 2013 issue and came across this star-spangled ombre cake.
I had been looking for the perfect red, white and blue dessert to make for the weekend, so this was a no-brainer. I was celebrating the Fourth at my parents’ lake house in Wisconsin and was also hosting a birthday party for one of my dearest friends. I followed the basics from the recipe and added my own twist. I started with blue on the bottom and worked my way up to white, pink, and finally, bright red at the top for a total of nine layers (yes, nine—the cake was more than a foot and a half tall!).
I topped it off with my own homemade frosting (a recipe I first discovered from Magnolia bakery, and one I have used consistently ever since), and dressed it up with multicolored sprinkles and a message to the birthday girl. It was one of the most beautiful cakes I have ever made, and it was definitely a crowd favorite.

Inspired by InStyle: Fourth of July Fabulous!
“I work at a day care for children, so my job is not necessarily the cleanest — if you’ve ever been around two and three year olds, you know! But I have finally decided to stop “saving” my outfits and clothes for the weekend, and wear them to work. Here is one of my new work outfits — I wore this to our Fourth of July party!”
