(NYFW Diary Day 1) A Day In the Life of: Melissa Rubini, InStyle Style Director
Alright, we are starting fashion month with New York Fashion Week and I already have a shopping list going, but that’s ok, I’ll edit it down in the end.
First things first: Coffee helps get me going. Then, I put on my red lips, thanks to my trusty NARS velvet matte lip pencil in Mysterious Red ($25; narscosmetics.com), and red nails, Tom Ford nail lacquer in Scarlet Chinois ($32; neimanmarcus.com). Next up is choosing an easy yet chic outfit (we have more than 10 shows to go to today): Araks dress, Louis Vuitton shoes, Tom Ford sunglasses and (my new love) this Saint Laurent classic yet oh-so-modern bag.
My most memorable shows:
BCBG Max Azria: Slouchy tailoring and light summery easiness - perfect for when the heat hits.
Honor: I’ve fallen in love! The models were skipping down the runway, bringing a much needed joy to fashion. The looks are a bit ’60s, a bit girly, but smart and very “now.”
Peter Som: If you lean toward more modern looks (I do myself sometimes), you will probably love this whole show. The ocean print was so cool! New waves for S/S 14!
Novis: New designer alert! Cute, feminine with hints of architectural lines. The designer (Jordana Warmflash) was chosen as one of the designers to watch in our September issue. Here she is with one of the models during her presentation. Another look from Novis is a white-and-blue ensemble with a lovely mix of textures and prints.
Suno: What a beautiful collection - use your imagination: Think safari in Hawaii and all the adventures in the sun.
I’m finally back home at 10:20 PM after a long day without dinner (or a proper lunch - a few leaves of lettuce just doesn’t cut it). Daughter is sleeping, husband is sleeping. Hugo (my dog) is the only one that keeps my company while I eat a ham and cheese sandwich before going to bed.
